What can we do to reconnect the disconnected to our community? We can’t brush off brokenness.
Horrifically and leaving the community shocked and in mourning, a student was killed and two injured in a 2022 stabbing at Northside High School in Jacksonville. In 2023, two students were shot at, tragically one being hit, across the road from the school once school let out for the day. The student reportedly notified school staff of concerns for her safety regarding another student that morning but no action was taken by the school's staff to ensure her safety. Parents and stakeholders have been attending meetings and advocating for safer schools, only to be met with resistance. Videos of the meetings showing such are available for viewing on YouTube. Subsequently, OCS received a $700,000 grant from the Department of Public Instruction's Center for Safer Schools. Reportedly, this was the second-highest amount of grant funds for any district in this year's Safer Schools grants. After receiving the grant, the superintendent stated, "Safety and security is the highest priority for our district." But is that true? Currently, no actions have been taken or safety solutions put in place utilizing the grant received in January.
